Chapter Fourteen

“Believe it or not, I’m not at all surprised to see you. I didn’t expect you to come by this early in the day, so I was a little thrown when Ingrid just buzzed me and said you were here. After you abruptly excused yourself from the restaurant on Thursday night, and I didn’t see you at church yesterday, somehow, I knew I’d see you today.” Jade stepped aside and allowed Kenyatta to enter into the office of her private practice. The fullof-confidence stride that Kenyatta normally possessed was nowhere to be found.

“Ughhhhhh!” was the only sound she made before dropping her Michael Kors designer tote on the floor and her behind on the leather couch that served as the centerpiece of the color-coordinated office.

When Jade lived in Virginia, prior to marrying Hunter and moving back to her hometown, she was one of three therapists who made up a partnership. Upon her relocation to Atlanta, her new husband encouraged her to launch out on her own and have the faith that God would do the rest. To demonstrate how much he believed in her abilities, Hunter insisted upon providing all of the funds necessary to purchase the office space and to get it remodeled to Jade’s liking. Her liking included much of the same setup that she had enjoyed in Virginia. The walls were covered with wallpaper that was a warm shade of beige accented with a paisley pattern that was the same burgundy color as her couch. Decorating accessories were kept to a minimum. Aside from Jade’s desk and the single leather couch, there was a five-tier bookshelf, two tall floor lamps, two large abstract framed wall paintings on the walls, a watercooler in the corner, and one mahogany coffee table that always had an open box of tissues in the center. The tissues came in handy during many of the sessions. To Jade, the room was inviting. She hoped it felt the same to her clients.

Hunter’s had been great advice and a great investment. Inside of a year, Dr. Jade Tides-Greene Associates had turned a profit, and business continued to be on the upswing. She hadn’t shared it with anyone other than Hunter, but her roster of clients had begun to include some of Atlanta’s most recognized actors and recording artists. It was amazing how much of a mental strain it was to be who they were. If more “ordinary people” knew the facts, they might not yearn so much for the celebrity lifestyle. Of course, with them, Jade was required to come on their turf so no one, including Ingrid, her office manager, would know of the affiliation. At the hourly rate they were willing to pay, Jade had no problem making the adjustment. She had one on the schedule to see later this afternoon, but for now, it was one of Jade’s best girls who needed her ears.

After watching Kenyatta’s slow entrance and hearing her agonizing moan, Jade closed the door and stood in place for a moment.
